SPECTRAL PARADIGMS - 2017

Artist Interviews : Stella Kajombo

Could you let us know in a few words what informs or underpins your practice?

My work is driven by my curiosity of in-between spaces. The space between the past and the present, for example; colonial versus post-colonial ideologies and the hybridity of cultures in relation to our everyday lives (such as the act of skin bleaching). I tend to explore these themes through materiality and performance, as a ritual process that allows me to raise questions whilst attempting to resolve at the same time.

SK: Yes! I believe that implementation of diversity quotas is so crucial. As much as we might like to  believe that institutions have moved so far ahead from what they used to offer, when it comes it equality, diversity and access to education, sadly, this isn't true. Institutions  today are still unable to cater to all members of society, particularly those from ethnic minority background. I believe that using our voices has been incredible in generating necessary attention.
